We need to make sure this wonderful stretch of coastline is preserved for the protection of wildlife and the enjoyment of our children and grandchildren. This week, folks in Rep. These solar panels will generate enough energy to fully power 75 homes a year. Rep. Thompson wants us to build on our solar successes because the potential is huge. More than 100,000 Americans work in the solar industry, double the number in 2009. They work at more than 5,600 companies, the vast majority being small businesses. And, solar is one the fastest growing sectors in the economy. By building on successes like those at Hidden Valley Lake we can create good jobs, move towards energy independence and help our environment.

This project represents a remarkable recovery of one of the San Francisco Bay’s great wetlands. It’s hard to believe that this area was once diked and drained for agricultural purposes. Then even after it was drained, it was used for commercial salt production. Many thanks to all those who worked so hard to make this restoration a reality. Because of our efforts, wildlife is being protected, water quality is being improved, hiking, fishing and hunting opportunities will be increased, and our kids and grandkids will be able to enjoy all this area has to offer.

Because we live in an agricultural bed rock of the country, we sometimes forget that people go to bed hungry every night. Also, it is important to remember that hunger disproportionately affects children. Nearly 40 percent of those who turn to charities for hunger relief are children, and households with children experience food insecurity at almost double the rate of households without children.

Mike Thompson, Supervisor Keith Caldwell and local leaders tour the Napa Sonoma Salt Marsh Recycled Water Project and Treatment Facility. The recycled water project consists of a 3.5-mile pipeline that will help restore more than 640-acres of former salt ponds near the Sonoma-Napa county border. One of the largest wetlands restoration projects on the West Coast, this project creates jobs, improves the environment, and strengthens the community. Rep. Mike Thompson helped to secure more than $1.6 million in Recovery Act funds to make this project possible.

Mike Thompson attends the opening “Mike’s Hike and Bike Trail” – a trail that stretches from Clarke’s Ranch and the eucalyptus grove, winds through restored wetlands and past old salt ponds, and ends beside the Napa River. This trail encompasses many of the community’s most important priorities. It invests in renewable energy by turning part of the old landfill into a 35 acre solar farm. It preserves open space, wildlife and wetlands, and it provides a space for folks in the community to get outdoors, exercise and improve their health. It also allows people to broaden their knowledge of the community with educational panels along the paths. While Congressman Thompson is honored to have the trail named after him, he emphasized that the praise goes those in the community who made this possible.

Mike Thompson presented a high-end recycled computer to the Crescent City Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Coast Guard Auxiliary plays a vital role in maintaining the safety of our local waterways, but they often have to provide their own equipment to get the job done. The Auxiliary’s only computer recently crashed, but because of Thompson’s e-waste recycling program he was able to provide them with a replacement from the Computer Recycling Center in Santa Rosa.

North Bay Water Reuse Project - This project was funded through the Recovery Act. It protects and supports our local agriculture, wetlands, and all migratory birds.
