Transitional Year Residency
The Transitional Internship Program accepts between 7-14 Residents a year. The program is designed to give the Transitional a broad educational base and at the same time meet the AOA and ACGME requirements for accreditation. Two weeks of leave/vacation time are allotted for interns and are usually taken during elective periods. Also, one must go on TDY (usually 8 days) to successfully complete the C4 training (Combat Casualty Care Course-comprised of ATLS and Field Training) offered at Fort Sam Houston. There are 13 four-week rotations as follows:
- Two General Medicine Ward
- One Emergency Medicine
- Two General Surgery
- Three Electives
- One Intensive Care Medicine
- One Orthopaedic Surgery
- One OB/GYN
- One Pediatrics
- One Month Primary Care
U.S. Army Graduate Medical Education (GME) has changed residency selections for some GME residencies
to a system of Preliminary-Transitional Positions (PTP). PTP slots are applied for in a similar method
that all other internship or residencies are obtained. The application process must be coordinated with
Program Directors (PD’s) in Transitional Year Residency but also the respective PDs in such residencies
as Anesthesia, Dermatology, and Opthalmology.
WBAMC’s Transitional Year Program includes six slots for PTP applicants. They are:
- 3 PGY-1 Anesthesilogy Slots
- 2 PGY-1 Dermatology Slots
- 1 PGY-1 Opthamology Slot
In addition to 8 “at large” transitional slots per year.
The Department of Graduate Medical Education understands that you may have special interest in a
certain field of training. We will always work with you in trying to modify your schedule when possible
to better your training in your interested field.
