Announcement

2009 Study of the United States Institute for Scholars

U. S. Embassy Seoul Cultural Affairs Office is announcing opportunities for the participation of Korean scholars in Summer Institutes for the study of the U.S.  All the study of the United States institutes are six-week programs held at university campuses through the United States.  Each institute is aimed at improving U.S. Studies curricula and teaching about the U.S. abroad.  Each seminar focuses on a particular discipline of the study of the U.S. on a special topic within a discipline.

Candidates should be active professors who have responsibility for teaching or curriculum development in the study of the USA in any department of the social sciences or humanities.  The desired candidate is someone who, in addition to outstanding academic and professorial credentials, will help develop the study of the USA at the Korean university on return, i.e., a professor whose home institution wants to introduce American studies to the university or who has been asked to develop new courses on America.  Professors who have completed their graduate study in the U.S. are at a serious disadvantage for selection, as preference is given to those experiencing the U.S. for the first time.   Fluency in English is essential, since the program will require of every participant an advanced command of the English language throughout the entire Institute period.  After preliminary screening at the U.S. Embassy Cultural Affairs Office, final selection decisions will be made in Washington, D.C.

ALL COSTS will be covered by the State Department, including international travel, domestic travel within the U.S., lodging, meals, allowances for cultural activities, and health insurance.  Participants must attend the entire program without arriving late or leaving early.  Family members cannot accompany the participant in any part of the program. Interested candidates should submit application to:

Dr. Chaeki Synn
Senior Cultural/Education Specialist

# 10 Namyoung-dong, Yongsan-ku, Seoul 140-160, KOREA

The deadline is February 6, 2009.
