U.S. Embassy Celebrates Sucesses of PEPFAR

June 1, 2012

Georgetown, Guyana – On May 31, 2012, the United States Embassy hosted a reception with a high level team of officials from the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator and representing the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) interagency team. In Guyana, the interagency team is comprised of the Department of Defense, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States Agency for International Development, Peace Corps, and Department of Labor. The reception brought together together key stakeholders of PEPFAR collaboration in Guyana, including the Prime Minister, Minister of Health and other representatives of the Ministry of Health, and PEPFAR implementing partners.

The high level delegation is in Guyana to look at the progress that the PEPFAR program has made since it began in 2003. The team is also here to meet with Government of Guyana to discuss how the program will transition in coming years from an emergency response to a sustained, country-led initiative. Over three days this week, the PEPFAR Guyana interagency team, in coordination with the Government of Guyana and PEPFAR implementing partners, has been reviewing the PEPFAR portfolio in order to help focus programming on priority areas, including most-at-risk-populations.

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This historic commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally.
