U.S. Embassy Hosts President’s Day Movie Showing

GEORGETOWN – The U.S. Embassy hosted a President’s Day movie showing on February 21 to University of Guyana International Relations students. The 14 students in attendance celebrated the U.S. holiday by watching a biographical video documentary of Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. After the showing, students shared their thoughts on the movie.

The students chose this video from a number of biographical videos on U.S. Presidents. Wilson was known for progress reforms on labor laws, including his ban on child labor. He was also known for his Fourteen Points speech, which advocated for peace in Europe post-World War I. After the showing, the students talked about Wilson’s leadership.

The students were surprised to learn that Wilson did not learn to read until he was ten years old and suffered from dyslexia. They discussed Wilson’s wife Ellen and how she supported him throughout his presidency. The students also learned about Wilson’s life as an academic before he was elected president.

President’s Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February in the United States. The holiday is also known as Washington’s Birthday in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States. President’s Day is the first U.S. federal holiday to honor an American citizen and was first celebrated on Washington’s Birthday, February 22. Today, the day does not commemorate one President in particular, but pays tribute to the office of the Presidency.
