Heather Brooks speaks with parents at the New Campbellville Secondary School

The U.S. Embassy hosted an Embassy Speakers Series presentation on Internet Safety, by Heather Brooks from the Regional Security Office, in January.  Brooks addressed Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Executives at the Embassy Auditorium on January 12.  She also spoke at the New Campbellville Secondary School on January 25 and the Fort Wellington Secondary School in Berbice on January 26.

Brooks spoke with parents about how they can protect their children from risks such as identity theft, piracy, and solicitation. Although most social networking sites used by children are legal and positive, there are individuals who attempt to exploit children through the use of online services and the Internet.  Children may also share personal information or seek out material that makes them vulnerable to crime.  She urged parents to be proactive in talking to their children about their Internet activity and safety risks.  She also added that educators and child advocates play a vital role in awareness of children’s online habits.

The U.S. Embassy offers public speakers on a variety of topics.  Through the Embassy Speakers Program, American Embassy representatives visit community centers and schools to discuss a range of current issues with youth, students, adults, or the general public.
