GIS Data
Federal, State, and local transportation, planning, and environmental agencies that intend to implement a GIS require digital GIS data layers. More agencies are using a variety of GIS packages tailored to specific application needs rather than a single standardized software package. For this reason, wide-ranging data in varying formats are needed. The GIS Data section identifies and offers access to sites that host downloadable data layers pertinent to transportation GIS.

GIS Software
Software capable of opening, reading, and manipulating spatial data is required for analysis in a GIS. Several software packages are available from commercial vendors across the country. The GIS Software page offers links to some of these software providers.

GIS-Related Organizations
Many GIS activities, such as research, technical assistance, and conferences, are conducted and sponsored by non-governmental organizations. The GIS-Related Organizations page links to websites of some of these groups.

Other Federal Agencies
GIS analysis is not limited to transportation planning efforts. Instead, GIS can be a powerful mapping tool for investigation and planning of social, economic, and natural systems. The links on the Other Federal Agencies page identify and provide access to other Federal Agencies' GIS sites.
