You can never have too much Wisdom

So says the young artist who submitted this rendition of "Wisdom" the 62 year old short-tailed albatross with her mate and chick.  Alyone Kuzmeek, one of the 2012 youth finalists, shares her love of nature and of art with her beautiful entry.  The Endangered Species Day Youth Art Contest provides young people with an opportunity to learn about endangered species and express their knowledge and support through artwork.  Started in 2006 by the United States Congress, Endangered Species Day recognizes the importance of endangered species and is an occasion to educate the public on how to protect them. The art contest is an integral part of the eighth annual national Endangered Species Day, celebrated on May 17, 2013.  Get out your pencils, oils, water colors and chalk to show your support of Endangered Species and art.

World's Oldest Known Wild Bird Hatches Another Chick

At least 62 years old, Wisdom the albatross is a mother again for what is estimated to be at least the 30th time. Her chick hatched on Sunday morning, February 3, 2013, making it the sixth consecutive year Wisdom has hatched an egg on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. She was first banded in 1956 while incubating an egg on Midway. Almost as amazing as being a parent at 62 is the number of miles Wisdom has likely logged -- about 50,000 a year as an adult -- which means Wisdom has flown at least two million to three million miles since she was first banded. To put it another way, that's four to six trips from the Earth to the moon and back again, with plenty of miles to spare.
