is a bilingual, multimedia digital library that tells the story of the American exploration and settlement of the West, the parallel exploration and settlement of Siberia and the Russian Far East, and the meeting of the Russian-American frontier in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Much of the primary material has never been published or is rare. The site is intended to demonstrate the educational and cultural potential of international cooperation in the development of digital libraries. (Library of Congress)

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the economies of Siberia and the American West experienced many parallel developments. Fur trading declined, while at the same time, mineral extraction intensified. Gold was discovered in the Yenisey River basin in Siberia in 1838-39, only ten years before John Sutter's men found it at the bottom of a stream in California. |
