As a Test Scientist at DHS’ Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), Dr. John Blackadar designs and oversees testing to evaluate radiological and nuclear detection systems – used by law enforcement and first responders to detect and identify potential nuclear threats.

Dr. Blackadar directed testing that informed the production and deployment of radiation detection devices for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Transportation Security Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard to more rapidly and accurately detect and identify radiological and nuclear threats.

He also served as the lead test scientist in efforts to explore alternative technologies to address the nation’s shortage of helium-3—a gas used in the detection of nuclear materials. Testing has allowed the government to identify safe and affordable alternatives to helium-3, offsetting the impact of diminishing helium-3 supplies.

DNDO works to improve the nation’s capability to detect and report unauthorized attempts to import, develop, or transport nuclear or radiological material for use against the United States. Together with partners across the Administration, DNDO helps integrate efforts to develop nuclear detection and forensics capabilities, respond to detection alarms, conduct research and development, and coordinate the development of the global nuclear detection architecture (GNDA).
