Briefs & On-Base Events


TRAINING FOR MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS INVOLVED IN HIRING: Hiring Reform is a collaborative initiative to streamline the hiring process within the Federal Government, as mandated by the President of the United States. This initiative is comprised of several key focus areas, one being the active involvement of managers in the hiring process. To support managers and supervisors involvement in hiring reform the following training videos have been designed. UPDATING A RESUME:
Civilian Air Force employees now have the opportunity to submit an updated resume reflecting their employment experience or skills via the Air Force Personnel Services (AFPERS) web-site for inclusion in their electronic Official Personnel Folder (e-OPF). An updated resume is important for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to, qualifications determinations for management directed placement actions, workforce shaping movements, etc. Use this link: https://gum-crm.csd.disa.mil/app/answers/detail/a_id/20009/p/1,2. Self-development for civilians: As a civil service employee, you are eligible to register for Squadron Officer School (SOS) by correspondence. This program is for GS-09 and above. Also available is the Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) & Air War College (AWC) by correspondence. Those who qualify are GS-11 and above for ACSC and GS-13 and above for AWC. Personal & Family Readiness Briefings (Pre-Deployment):
This briefing is now offered every Tuesday at 1300, except for holidays or military family days. Spouses and Guardians are highly encouraged to attend to get the latest information & resources available. This briefing is mandatory for all members deploying, remote tours and 30+ day Tdys. Call 606-0039 to register.

Are you affected by the force management and high year tenure programs or planning on separating or retiring in two years or less? If so, now is the time to start attending various services which assist with successful transition. The first step, and also mandatory, is the pre-separation briefing offered every Friday from 1 - 4 p.m. If you are unable to attend pre-separation briefings on Friday afternoons then call for a one-on-one briefing. The mandatory pre-separation briefing needs to be done no later than 90 days from date of separation and also required before attending the TAP workshop. Registration is required due to limited number of seats, call 606-0039.

Airman and Family Readiness Center closure: The Airman and Family Readiness Center is scheduled to close every third Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to noon for readiness training, Emergency Air Force Aid Assistance will still be provided. Call 606-0039 for more information.

Preschool story time:
The base library hosts preschool story time sessions at the library every Thursday at 10 a.m. For more information call the base library at 606-6414.

After Hours AFAS change: Members seeking emergency Air Force Aid Emergency Assistance after-hours are to call the American Red Cross toll free at 1-877-272-7337 when they require AFAS emergency financial assistance. The call can be made by the member seeking the assistance or a first sergeant or commander. The preferred method is for the member to call.

Vandenberg's Thrift Shop has new hours: The Vandenberg Thrift Shop hours are now from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. For more information, call the thrift shop at 606-3128. 

New legal office operation hours: Legal assistance is available on a walk‐in basis from 1-2 p.m., Monday through Wednesday. Notary and claims assistance is available on a walk‐in basis from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Emergency claims, deployment related or legal assistance services will be provided as required. For additional information, please contact the legal office at 1-805-605‐6200. New Legal Assistance Website: https://aflegalassistance.law.af.mil. Use the website to fill out will and power of attorney worksheets, find handouts on legal topics of interest, and fill out the customer satisfaction survey. We want to make sure your experience with the legal office is a good one. When filling out a worksheet online, don't forget to write down your ticket number, as it will be needed by your servicing attorney to retrieve your worksheet when you come in during our walk-in hours.

Clubs and Off-Base Events


AADD meeting: Airmen against Drunk Driving meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the base library from 3 - 4:30 p.m. everyone is invited and leaders are welcome to attend. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions regarding the program, e-mail VandenbergAADD@vandenberg.af.mil.

NCOA meeting: The Noncommissioned Officers Association meets every third Friday of the month, 1530, in the Pacific Coast Club Quiet Room. Come on out and bring a new friend/co-worker who may be interested in joining the association. The NCOA was established to enhance and maintain the quality of life for noncommissioned and petty officers in all branches of the Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserves and their families. Air Force Sergeants Association meeting: There will be an AFSA meeting every second Tuesday of the month at 11 a.m. in the Pacific Coast Club Warrior Room. All members and prospective members are invited. For more information, contact Staff Sgt. Joshua Young at 606-0393. 

Green Knights Motorcycle Club: Chapter 39 of the Green Knights is a military motorcycle club that is open to all styles of motorcycles. Membership is open to all Department of Defense community members who enjoy riding. For more information, contact 2nd Lt. Julian Vaiana by e-mail at Julian.Vaiana@vandenberg.af.mil.

Knights of Columbus: In 2006, the 1.7 million members of the Knights of Columbus donated over $143 million and volunteered over 68 million hours of their time to charities. For more information join, join the group at one of their monthly meetings. Meetings are held evey second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Chapel 1 Annex. For further information, cal Lt. Col. Vandenberg Triathlon Club: Vandenberg Triathlon Club is forming to make life easier for biker's. No membership dues, just a tri-specific group to share training tips and schedules. All swim, bike, run enthusiasts are welcome. For more information, call Capt. Matthew Hlivko at 605-6280.

Vandenberg Aqualliers Dive Club: Attention divers! The Aqualliers Dive Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 5 p.m.  in the Pacific Coast Club quiet room. All divers or potential divers are welcome to attend. For more information, call 606-2698.

Hoyt S. Vandenberg Saddle Club: The Hoyt S. Vandenberg Saddle Club has vacancies for new members. The Saddle Club is a 37 acre facility that includes 50 barns, show arena; warm up arenas, round pen, club house and easy access to miles of open trails on Vandenberg's north base. The club is open to active duty, Department of Defense employees and prime contractors assigned to or working on Vandenberg and their families. Military retirees are also welcome. Membership meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. For more information, call 606-8325.

The Vandenberg Rising Six:
The Vandenberg Rising Six meetings are held every second Friday of the month, at 3 p.m. in the Enlisted Lounge of the Pacific Coast Club. Membership is free, and open to every E-1 through E-6 on the installation. For more information, e-mail the Vandenberg Rising Six or contact Tech. Sgt. Angela Dixon at 605-6245.

Vandenberg Top-3 Organization Meeting: Vandenberg's Top-3 meets the second Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Pacific Coast Club. Volunteers 

The Police Activities League (P.A.L.) is looking for caring individuals who want to make a difference in the life of a youth! P.A.L. is in the recruitment phase of its new Mentoring Program and invites adults in the Santa Maria community to become a part of PAL'S efforts to provide youth with positive and healthy lifestyle choices. The P.A.L. Mentoring Program will require each mentor to spend one hour a week with a youth in our after-school or evening program. Thru one and one relationships, mentors and teens will be engaged in a number of fun activities that may include, but are not limited to: reading, games, sports, music, arts and crafts, and more! All mentors are required to go through a screening process and training program before being accepted into the program. Volunteers needed: The Youth Center is looking for volunteer tutors for their open recreation program (ages 9-18). They are looking for volunteer tutors for elementary and junior high match, English and science. Anyone interested can contact Ms. Tawny Toscano at the Youth Center at 606-2152.

Volunteers needed: Mothers of Preschoolers is in need of childcare volunteers. Volunteers are needed from 8:45-11:15 a.m. for two Thursdays a month. Thrift shop volunteers wanted: The Vandenberg Thrift Shop is currently seeking volunteers. For more information, call 606-3128.

Airman's Attic volunteers wanted: Volunteers are needed at the Vandenberg Airman's Attic on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call Betty James at 606-5484 for more information.

Upcoming Class: 

Tuition assistance for civil service employees:
Tuition assistance is available for permanent full time civil service employees who are not in a career program. To be funded, courses must be part of an approved degree or certificate plan from an accredited college or university and be mission-related. For more information, call Valerie Stark, the Vandenberg's civilian training manager, at 605-5913.

Air Force Aid College Grant: Last year, the Air Force Aid Society awarded $7 million in college education grants to Air Force dependents. Your son, daughter or spouse could be an eligible candidate. Visit the Society's web site at www.afas.org for more information and an application for the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant Program.

Low-cost SAT and ACT prep courses: Order through www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil. Families who request the program pay shipping and handling.
