Mission

The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), located within the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, supports efforts to expand political participation, strengthen civil society and the rule of law, empower women and youth, create educational opportunities, and foster economic reform throughout the Middle East and North Africa. In support of these goals, MEPI works with non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and academic institutions, as well as governments. Activities

The Tunis RO coordinates projects and activities to promote reforms in four main areas, or pillars: political, economic, education, and the empowerment of women and girls.  MEPI’s annual Local Grants program supports individuals and civil society organizations working to strengthen their communities.  MEPI also provides opportunities for a wide range of people to visit the United States for training and networking, including students, entrepreneurs, and future leaders in politics, law, journalism, and other fields.

Local Partners

MEPI’s partners include local and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, universities, international institutions, and in some cases, the governments of the region.  MEPI’s funding is in addition to the bilateral economic assistance the United States provides annually to the countries in the region.
