Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA)

The United States Embassy is pleased to announce the competition of scholarships for young English language educators in the USA for the academic year 2009-2011.

What is the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA)?

The FLTA program is an opportunity for young English teachers to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of U.S. culture and customs while strengthening the instruction of foreign languages at U.S. colleges and universities.

What will you do as a Fulbright FLTA Fellow?

As a Fulbright FLTA Fellow, you will spend one academic year at a U.S. university where you will teach Arabic and enroll in at least two U.S. studies or teaching methodology classes each semester. You will also share the culture and values of your country with Americans in university clubs, language dormitories and in the community. When you return home, you will have a high proficiency in English and will speak with first-hand knowledge about the United States, its culture and people.

Who are the Fulbright FLTA Fellows?

Fulbright FLTA Fellows are young teachers or graduate students from around the world. The Fellows are enthusiastic about teaching their native language and culture to U.S. students. They have demonstrated leadership skills, the ability to motivate language learners and an interest in representing their societies in American communities.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Applicants must:

  • Be a Kuwaiti citizen or the child of a Kuwaiti mother;
  • Be English teachers or in training to become English teachers;
  • Be between 21 and 29 years old at the time of application;
  • Have a BA degree;
  • Show fluency in English as demonstrated by a minimum score of:
  • 550 on the paper-based TOEFL,
  • 213 on the computer-based TOEFL,
  • 79-80 on the Internet-based TOEFL, or
  • 6.0 IELTS;
  • Reside in Kuwait throughout the nomination and selection process, and return to  Kuwait after completing the nine-month program;

Family members are not allowed to accompany participants in the FLTA program.

Individuals with U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residence status are NOT eligible for this program.

What are the benefits of being a Fulbright FLTA Fellow?

  • The opportunity to refine your teaching skills and increase your English language proficiency.
  • During the academic year, FLTA Fellows are also invited to participate in special Fulbright workshops and Fulbright enrichment seminars.

What will be your visa status in the United States?

Fulbright FLTA Fellows live and study in the U.S. on a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. The program does NOT support J-2 visas for spouses or dependents. The Fulbright FLTA program is a nine month, non-degree program and is not renewable.

How can I become a Fulbright FLTA Fellow?

  • Fill out the personal information form and the supplemental questions, including the medical form.
  • Submit certified/original copies of all university diplomas, certificates, and official transcripts.  Documents must be translated into English.
  • Three letters of recommendation on-line or in sealed envelopes.
  • Valid TOEFL or IELTS score (See note below).
  • All documents should be submitted in a single package.  Incomplete application packages will not be considered.

Note:

You must include the Institute of International Education (IIE) institutional code when taking the TOEFL test. IIE’s code for the TOEFL is 2326.

Deadline:

Completed application packages must be submitted (on-line application AND supporting documents) by September 10, 2009.  Applications submitted after this date WILL NOT be considered.  Supporting documents must be sent or brought in person to the Public Affairs Office at the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait no later than September 10, 2009.
