TOL FAQs

-What is tricareonline.com?

TRICAREonline.com is a single, common dot-com web site for all Department of Defense (DoD) patients, providers and managers. As a dot-com, it is accessible anywhere and anytime. It makes TRICARE healthcare portable, universal, and secure. It was designed in response to beneficiary requests for greater access to health and wellness information, medication refills and renewals and their doctor.

-Who can access tricareonline.com?

TRICARE Online has a .com address that is available to anyone who has access to the Internet. However, in order to take advantage of the DoD Military Health System (MHS) specific information and interactive features, a user must register using unique identity information. This information is validated by the Defense Eligibility and Enrollment System (DEERS) to ensure that the user is potentially eligible for care in the MHS.

-How is the TRICARE Online (TOL) Web site different from TRICARE.osd.mil?

The TRICARE.osd.mil web site provides extensive information about the TRICARE Health Plan and benefits, and updated information on medical policy and activities within the DoD. TRICARE Online (TOL) does link to specific parts of this web site, such as areas that provide information on claims, enrollment, pharmacy and dental benefits.

Physical Therapy:

Q:  I've been referred to orthopedics/physical therapy - will I be contacted to schedule this appointment?

A:  Only patients referred off post would receive contact.  Patients need to contact the appointment line to schedule orthopedics or physical therapy appointments (note this is pending input on whether or not the appointment line will be calling to schedule initial appointments in the future).

Laboratory:

Q: I need to update my HIV for MEDPROS, do I need an appointment?

A: No, just come to the Lab with ID Card and we will draw the specimen and provide you with a printout to give to your Command to prove that you have been drawn.  Then your unit MEDPROS clerk can change your status to drawn or wait until the clerks at MEDPROS enter the data.

Pediatrics:

Q:  What do I do if I am Pregnant?

A:  If you are coming here and are already pregnant and need a referral for obstetric care, you must make an appointment. If you want a pregnancy test walk-in to clinic M-F 0700-1600 daily and nurse will put in a pregnancy test for you. If test comes back positive, the nurse will call you and set up an appt for you to see your PCM and get referral. All persons getting obstetric referral will be required to go to TRICARE Service Center for a briefing prior to any referral being processed.

Radiology:

Q.)  How do I schedule a mammogram?

A.)  Make an appointment with your Primary Care Manager for a beast exam.  Your provider will request an order for the most accurate mammogram order based on what is or is not felt during the breast exam.  Once the order has been placed you will go to Radiology Services to schedule your appointment.

Q.)  Should I be worried if I am notified to return to Radiology Services for additional views of my breast?

A.)  Additional views are common.  Radiologists want to make the best informed decision; sometimes this requires additional views.  When you return for additional views our Radiologists will sit down with you and discuss your concerns.

Referral Management:

Q:  How do I get care after hours?

A:  The On-Call Provider is available after-hours, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. Should you believe that you have a medical concern that requires urgent, after hours evaluation and is not life threatening, please perform the following:

  1. Call 734-9000 and speak to the AOD to have the on-call provider call you.
  2. The provider will determine your care needs and instruct you to go to an Urgent Care Center, ER or make an appointment for the next available day.

Q:  What constitutes an Emergency Room visit?

A:  Emergencies are medical conditions that pose a threat to life, limb or eyesight. Emergencies should be treated immediately and emergency room visits are covered under your TRICARE Benefit.

Q:  How do I get a referral?

A:  A referral is the process of sending a patient to another professional provider for consultation or a health care service that the patients Primary Care Manager believes is necessary but is not prepared or qualified to provide (also known as specialty care).  To obtain a referral for specialty care, make an appointment with your PCM.  Your PCM will determine whether or not you need to see a specialist and will enter a referral for you if needed.  Your PCM will give you a copy of the referral request and any clinical notes, medication lists, and diagnostic reports deemed necessary for the specialist to review. Please take these documents to your specialist at your first appointment.
