Important Notice for Legal Permanent Residents (LPR):

Effective April 16, 2012, LPRs who have lost their green card will be issued a boarding foil instead of a transportation letter. If green card is lost, the U.S. Consulate General may be able to issue a Boarding Foil (formerly known as transportation letter) that will permit to return to the United States. In order to apply for a boarding foil at the U.S. Consulate General in Kolkata, one must submit a completed Form I-90 (available at http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-90.pdf), a photocopy of passport, a police report regarding the loss of the green card, evidence of the most recent date of departure from the United states, a copy of green card as an evidence of legal permanent resident (LPR) status, and one recent color photograph (50mm x 50 mm) with white background to VFS Kolkata. Consulate General Kolkata will need three business days in order to confirm an applicant’s LPR status with other offices.  Upon confirmation, Visa Unit will send a notification regarding the appointment at the Consulate. Please note that on completion of the process, the boarding foil along with the passport will be couriered back to the mailing address.

All boarding foils issued by this office are valid for 30 days.  If application for a boarding foil is approved and the applicant fails to travel within the 30 day window, they will have to follow the same process to obtain a new boarding foil.
