FSIS provides opportunities for citizens through internships, fellowships and student employment programs.
Pathways for Students and Recent Graduates
On December 27, 2010, President Obama signed Executive Order 13562, Recruiting and Hiring Students and Recent Graduates,
which created the Pathways Programs. The Pathways Programs consist of three
components: The Internship Program, The Recent Graduates Program, and the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program.
Internship Program
The Internship Program replaces the formerly known Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Temporary Employment Program
(STEP). The Student Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from
high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore federal careers while still in school. Internship
Program participants are referred to as "interns." FSIS is currently using the Internship Program under Pathways to hire paid interns.
Food Safety Fellows
FSIS established the Food Safety Fellows Program to attract and develop a diverse cadre of superb post-doctoral scientists who
have valuable expertise and knowledge in cutting-edge scientific and technical areas.
Internships & Externships
FSIS provides students with an opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of positions. Discover types of opportunities,
learn how to apply, and find information about opportunities for veterinary students.
Volunteer Student Program
The Volunteer Student Program (VSP) was established to formalize the relationship between FSIS and various colleges and
universities for the purpose of providing training to students with an interest in food safety and
public health.
