Michael W. Biering received a commission in the Corps of Engineers upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1978. He earned a Masters of Science Degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a graduate of the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Course, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College and the Army War College. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and Georgia and is a Certified Facility Manager. He is fluent in Portuguese.
Mr. Biering served 26 years in the Army, holding a variety of command and staff positions, to include three overseas tours. Assignments included commanding the 36th Engineer Group at Fort Benning and in Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was Chief, Dominant Maneuver Division, and Force Development Directorate, in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs in the Pentagon. He commanded the 62d Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy) at Fort Hood, Texas, where he deployed with the unit in support of Operations Joint Guard and Joint Endeavor. His other assignments include: Partnership for Peace Exercise Planner, Headquarters, Land Forces, Central Europe in Heidelberg, Germany; Chief, Military Division, in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Engineers, U.S. Army South, Fort Clayton, Panama; Executive Officer and Operations Officer, 536th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Heavy), Fort Kobbe, Panama; Assistant Area Engineer, Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Exchange Officer to Brazil in the 3d Brazilian Engineer Construction Battalion; Executive Officer and Company Commander, E Company, 3d Combat Engineer Battalion, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia; and Platoon Leader and Executive Officer, A Company, 3d Combat Engineer Battalion, 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Stewart, Georgia. He served as Director of Public Works in July of 2003 and transitioned to civil service in September of 2004. His assumed his current position as the Fort Stewart Deputy Garrison Commander in June 2008.
Mr. Biering’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (with two oak leaf clusters), the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 oak leaf clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with one oak leaf cluster); Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; the NATO Medal; and Parachutist Badge, and the Army Staff Badge. He has also been recognized as a Patron of Armor and awarded the St. Maurice Medal.
