Privatized Housing Government Housing Unaccompanied Housing Housing in the Local Community

Housing in the Local Community
The Housing Management Office (HMO) provides all DoD personnel with a personalized service to assist in locating suitable housing in your new host country. Moving to a new country can often be confusing and stressful; however, it can also be exciting. Living off base provides members and families the chance to experience a new culture and make friends with their host country neighbors. The HMO will assist you every step of the way to help you find your new home in the local community.

Housing Services
Contact the HMO as soon as you know you are moving. The government housing team will provide you the latest information on the local housing situation as well as local laws governing off-base housing. The HMO partners with landlords, realtors and property managers to make sure you receive the most current information about the local housing market.

The HMO monitors off-base rental listings to ensure that they are safe and adequate. All housing units are listed in the Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN), a joint service, DoD-sponsored website that offers a 24/7/365 single source of available housing to incoming military and their families.

Go to AHRN.com and create a personal account to view the available housing and get a feel for the size, style and type of housing around your new installation. If you find available units you are interested in, we do advise that you wait until you arrive to secure housing so that you can tour the prospective units and surrounding area.

The HMO can assist you by:
- Providing translation services to establish appointments to view available units
- Negotiating lease contracts
- Assisting in establishing utility services
- Providing furnishings support. See Furnishings Management for a list of the Duration of Tour Items available.

The HMO can help in arranging transportation to view units, although availability is limited. In addition some of the local realtors will collect you from the visitor centre near to Liberty Lodge and take you to properties they have listed. In order to facilitate viewing you may find that your sponsor or local car hire companies may be able to provide further assistance.

After you move into your home, the HMO is available for on-going assistance with translation services should you need to communicate with your landlord.

Community Housing Units
The HMO provides up-to-date listings of available economy units, translation services, and landlord/tenant mediation.

The communities surrounding Lakenheath and Mildenhall offer a number of affordable and beautiful rentals for those seeking off-base housing. The Lakenheath Housing Office has a team specifically for off-base referral inquiries. The Housing Offices use AHRN.com to keep a current and up-to-date listing of available housing rentals nearest to the base (Lakenheath, Mildenhall, Barton Mills, Brandon, Thetford and Newmarket) and those a little farther away (Bury St Edmunds, Ely, Cambridge). Be aware that road conditions change seasonally; for most of the fall and winter months, driving to and from work will occur in the dark and English roads are not well lighted.
Housing within the immediate area of the base is primarily detached (single house), semi-detached (duplex) and terraced (in rows). Housing on the economy may not be what you're used to in the U.S. British houses are generally smaller and larger houses are two stories with steep staircases. The hallways and doorways are narrower with most of the fitted kitchens not being able to accommodate U.S.-specific appliances.

If you are bringing pets, or plan on buying a pet while in the UK, please be advised that 80 percent of all rentals off base do not allow pets. Those that do may require additional, upfront payment from you as a security deposit in the event of damage incurred. This may cost you anywhere from an additional 100-500 pounds sterling.

For information about the housing allowances that financially support your move, see Referral and Relocation Assistance.

Personal Property Insurance
You need to obtain legal liability and personal property insurance for your possessions and should choose the options and amounts that best fit your needs and lifestyle.

Realtor Services
Contact the HMO for a comprehensive list of realtors and other agents available in the area.

Local realtors will assist you in your house search, with the majority providing transportation to view houses within the area. There are also a number of agents who do not charge finder's or administration fees.

School Information
For families, we understand that where your children attend school plays a large factor in the decision of where to live.

For your convenience, all community housing listings in the Automated Housing Referral Network site (AHRN.com) indicate the school that supports the housing unit as well as if the DoDD's school bus service is provided.

For more information about schools, visit the Isle District website.
