Severe Weather Traffic Advisory:
With the possibility of severe weather in the forecast for the early morning hours tomorrow, the Jacksonville Police
Department offers the following Traffic Advisory. “Conditions could develop on roadways that could affect the
early morning motorists” stated Lieutenant Sean Magill, Traffic Supervisor. “If driving before sunrise – be aware
that high winds could result in fallen tree limbs or other debris.”
JPD has equipment, staff and procedures in place to coordinate with City of Jacksonville Streets Division and
NCDOT should any power outage occur that results in a loss of power to traffic signals. “Should you approach a
traffic signal that is not operating, state law requires that all vehicles must come to a stop and treat the intersection
as a 3-way or 4-way stop. Be alert and follow directions of officers that may be in the roadway directing traffic.”
added Magill.
The Jacksonville Police Department offers the following tips about cautious driving in severe weather conditions:
- Venture out only if absolutely necessary – Consider staying home until road conditions improve.
- Reduce your speed. “Posted speed limits are designed for normal driving conditions” stated Lieutenant
Sean Magill, JPD Traffic Division Supervisor. “In poor weather conditions – reducing your speed is
imperative.”
- Allow plenty of extra time to reach your destination.
- Double the normal distance in following the car in front of you.
- Make sure that your vehicle is ready for inclement weather. Tires, brakes, lights and windshield wipers
should all be in good condition.
Motorists seeking information about specific roadway conditions should contact NC DOT by calling 511 or 1-877-
DOT-4YOU. DOT also provides road condition information on their Traveler Information Management System
