About Camp Fuji

Administration

1. Camp Fuji is a dependent-restricted 1 year tour.

2. If you have dependents you will receive basic allowance for housing (BAH) at the location of your last permanent duty station (PDS), if they are not in Government housing. If the dependents residence zip code is different than your last PDS your PCS orders need to be endorsed by your detaching administrative center authorizing you to receive the BAH rate of the actual residence zip code. (Refer to Joint Federal Travel Regulation (JFTR) U10408 Table U10E-6 Rule 1 and MCO 7220.56).

3. All E-6 and above rate COMRATS.

4. If you are coming to Camp Fuji contact us so that we can get you a sponsor.

5. There is NO off-base housing, and you do not rate any overseas housing allowances (OHA, MIHA, etc.). All military personnel are housed in either the BEQ (E-1 - E-5) or the BOQ (E-6 and above).

6. If you want to look up allowance rates for Camp Fuji, such as cost of living allowance (COLA), go to this website, and then click on RATES. Our COLA Code is JA067.

7. You rate family separation allowance (FSA-R) for your dependents, while you are stationed at Camp Fuji.

Geography

Camp Fuji is located at the base of Mount Fuji, with the Command Post being 2,112 feet and the Community Center at 2,031 feet above sea level. The air is thin, but you'll rapidly adjust to the altitude. The weather is generally pleasant, although you can expect the full range of temperatures, from very cold to very warm and humid. We average about 35 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, and receive snow several times during the course of the year, but it does very little to hamper our mission accomplishment.

Transportation

The Green Line, operated by CATC GME provides transportation to the neighboring Yokosuka Naval Base. Transportation by train or commercial bus is also available, and not very expensive - round trip to Tokyo costs about $20.00 by train, $16.00 by bus. The bus ride from Camp Fuji to the train station (10km) costs only ¥360 or about $4.

Vehicles

You must be a Cpl or above to own a vehicle and have command approval. Cpl's have to be in Japan for 90 days before they can apply. LCpl's and below can own a vehicle after extending their overseas tour for a year. All vehicles must be registered with PMO and have Personal Damage Insurance and Japanese Compulsory Insurance. All vehicles must pass annual maintenance inspections before the owner can purchase insurance. An annual road tax must be paid to the GOJ and to drive a POV in Japan you must apply through the command for a license. Motorcycles are not authorized for E-3 and below. If you purchase an automobile, you can expect to spend a lot of money on insurance, road tolls, etc. However, you may purchase a used automobile for $800 - $1000 dollars, and it will be in good condition.

Money

There are no Banks, Camp Fuji has two ATMs. The costs on base are moderate, but things off base can be very expensive. The cost of living allowance (COLA) you will receive will offset some of the expense. Auto purchases are based on individual requests, requiring the Commanding Officer's approval. Marine members of NFCU may also use the branch office at Yokosuka to obtain cash and take care of other financial obligations.

Local Information

Camp Fuji Located in East Central Japan, Camp Fuji has a number of neighbors. Takigahara Garrison, a Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force facility, is across the street. Gotemba City, population about 85,000, is right outside the gate. Gotemba has nice shops and restaurants and we have a good relationship with the local people. They invite you to a number of social events each year. MCCS Camp Fuji also has a brand new Community Center at Camp Fuji, as well as providing us with all the gym and trips and recreation office. Within about a two hours from Camp Fuji, either by car or train, you can enjoy several U.S. military bases which include Camp Zama Army Base, Atsugi Naval Air Facility, Yokosuka Naval Base, and Yokota Air Force Base. They have golf courses, PX's, commissaries, movie theaters, and Bowling Centers. Tokyo, a city of 12 million, is only 96 km from Camp Fuji, and the favorite liberty spot for Marines as well as a cultural and entertainment center.

Amenities

Camp Fuji is essentially fully equipped, lacking in only a few of the conveniences found at larger facilities. We have a small medical clinic and a full service post office. There is a small 7-day store, but no commissary. Although there is no banking service the club can make Yen conversions. Our recreational facilities consist of two gyms, racquetball and volleyball courts, a library, a small Officer/SNCO Club (Station 4), and an Enlisted Club (the Roadhouse).

Uniform

The utility uniform is the normal uniform of the Day. You will need all of your uniforms while stationed here, as well as sufficient civilian attire. It is strongly recommended that you have all of the uniforms and accessories (i.e. buttons, tie clasps, etc.) prior to coming to Camp Fuji, because our small PX has very few uniform items. Let it be noted, however, that one can order most items from the PX, even if they do not have them on hand.
