Strengthening Local Food Networks across Appalachia


An Appalachian Regional Commission Workshop on
Sustainable Agriculture and Local Food Systems


May 26, 2011 • 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. • Unicoi, Tennessee

Interest in sustainable agriculture is putting the Appalachian Region's rich agricultural life and diverse food assets on the map. Across the Region, communities are developing partnerships to take advantage of the economic opportunities this approach offers. The Appalachian Regional Commission is convening a series of workshops to help develop strategies to grow local food networks through regional collaboration. The fourth of these workshops will be held in Unicoi, Tennessee, on May 26.

Workshop presenters will include:

  • Johnny and Pat Lynch, Farmhouse Gallery and Gardens, Unicoi, Tennessee
  • Larry Fisher, Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (ACEnet), Athens, Ohio
  • Mary Lou Surgi, Blue Ridge Food Ventures, Asheville, North Carolina
  • Tess Lloyd, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee
  • Kathlyn Terry, Appalachian Sustainable Development, Abingdon, Virginia

When: May 26, 2011, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Where: Farmhouse Gallery and Gardens, 121 Covered Bridge Lane, Unicoi, Tennessee.

Cost: $20; includes an Appalachian Foodways Luncheon prepared by the Farmhouse Gallery and Gardens.

How to Register: Send an email to events@arc.gov with the following information: Participant name, email address, and phone number. Workshop participants are asked to contribute the $20 via check or money order payable to the First Tennessee Development District, or FTDD, to defray the cost of lunch and refreshments. Please bring the check/money order to the workshop.
