The Appalachian Higher Education (AHE) Initiative is a collection of state-based centers and a network of mentors providing technical assistance, training, and support to help increase the college-going rates at high schools in their designated service areas. "College-going", as defined by the AHE Initiative, refers to a student's participation in any postsecondary education or military service by the fall following graduation from high school. Since FY 1999, AHE centers have been working in nine Appalachian states.
The Appalachian Regional Commission held a planning workshop July 24–25, 2012, to review the initiative's activities, assess its impact to date, and provide recommendations for the future. The workshop addressed three key questions:
- Should the AHE centers continue operating as an ARC initiative?
- If the AHE centers are to continue, should the AHE network be maintained?
- If the AHE centers and/or network are to be maintained, what level of support from ARC should be provided?
