Making Appalachia Stronger in Challenging Times

In today's uncertain economy, there is a constant call for government at all levels to maximize resources and do more with less. At the same time, the legislative horizon is changing, creating new funding priorities and policies that will impact how local communities plan and implement economic development programs. This environment presents both a challenge and an opportunity for local development districts (LDDs) to retool their missions and programs to better serve Appalachia. More than ever, LDDs can have a critical role to play in helping strengthen the Appalachian Region's economy and make government programs more effective and efficient.

The 2011 DDAA conference, Making Appalachia Stronger in Challenging Times, will provide information on how LDDs can adapt strategically to better meet communities' needs today and to enhance the delivery of programs and services. Conference sessions will provide insight on key political and legislative changes, and examples of effective development programs and activities taking place across Appalachia and the country.

The conference will also include activities that encourage networking and idea sharing with colleagues from throughout the Region, and events that honor those who have made significant contributions to Appalachia's economic and community well-being. Several conference events will be held in partnership with the National Association of Development Organizations, including the Federal Agency Roundtable Networking Session on Monday afternoon.
