Mankato Free Press: Franken goes to bat for Postal Service

Friday, March 2, 2012

Sen. Franken is fighting to protect Minnesota facilities and the high standards of shipping available to Minnesotans. Sen. Franken is concerned about the impending Postal Service budget crunch. This budget crunch could lead to the closure of facilities in Minnesota and Sen. Franken believes that would be detrimental to Minnesota.

"We want to keep one-to-three-day delivery standards for first-class mail, and that means keeping those processing facilities open and also keeping rural post offices open," Franken said in a conference call.

...

"I don't want that," Franken said. "If the closures take place, it will have deep implications for businesses and families in Minnesota."

Legislation is being developed in the Senate to help ease the budget crunch facing the Postal Service, and Franken hopes an amendment can be added requiring that current delivery standards be maintained.

"I believe (the legislation) needs to be significantly improved to maintain these delivery standards and also protect rural post offices in the state," the first-term Democrat said.
