Post Doctoral Research Programs
In order to stay on the leading edge of technology, any laboratory must have a constant influx of new ideas and fresh perspectives. One way ARL does this is through its Post Doctoral Research Programs. Recent Ph.Ds or Sc.Ds arrive at the laboratory to conduct research under the guidance of an ARL advisor. Postdoctoral fellowships (hereafter referred to as "postdocs") can last up to three years with annual renewals, and may be hired by the laboratory, although not necessarily into the group where they conducted their postdoctoral research.
ARL has two ARL-wide post doctoral research programs: one administered by the National Research Council (NRC) and the other by the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). Both programs are open to scientists and engineers with U.S. citizenship.
Application deadlines for the NRC program are: February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1 with the review process taking approximately two and a half months. The ORAU program processes applications throughout the year with a shorter process time. Initial appointments are for one year and can be renewed for a second or third year based on a progress and proposed continuation plan, the recommendation of the adviser, and availability of funding.
Stipends for research associates range from $68K to $74K, depending on the program, location, ARL directorate, and academic discipline of the applicant's degree. For applicants that have research experience beyond the doctoral, a supplement for relevant experience may be available. For further details, see NRC and ORAU.
As an extension of the NRC program, ARL and the U.S. Military Academy Department of Mathematics at West Point jointly sponsor a teaching-research program, known as the Davies Fellowship, in which the postdocs spend half of their fellowship year teaching at West Point and half conducting research with an ARL adviser.
