DEFINITION
Transportability is the inherent capability of an item or system to be effectively and efficiently moved by required transportation assets and modes (land, rail, water, and air).
Transportability Engineering is the process of identifying and measuring limiting constraints, characteristics, and environments of transportation systems; the integration of these data into design criteria to use operational and planned transportation capability effectively; and the development of technical transportability guidance.
GENERAL INFORMATION/NARRATIVE
This formal program directed by AR 70-47 (Engineering for Transportability Program), that a transportability engineering analysis and/or approval be performed by the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) Transportation Engineering Agency (TEA) to verify that Army materiel can be safely moved to the battlefield by the required transport modes. Transportability of a new system or equipment is analyzed in respect to the impact it has on the total force transportation requirements. Transportability is a critical design element of the system.

Required For: Engineering for transportability program is required for all end items of equipment that are obtained through the materiel acquisition process for adoption into the military.
When Required: Transportability approval is required for transportability problem items prior to MS C (per AR 70-1, AR 70-47, and AR 700-127) and must be confirmed prior to the production decision.
