Mission

The Clinical Research Fellowship is a formal training program within the Army Medical Department that teaches the development and conduct of clinical research. An Army-sponsored GME fellowship program in Clinical Research is available at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC). This two year GME training program, with up to two fellows accepted each year, is conducted in association with San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Funding support is available for fellows to include educational fees, TDY, and specific research funding up to $15,000.

This program provides unique skills required to effectively manage clinical investigation programs and research oversight in medical treatment facilities throughout the DoD. Specialty training in clinical research will qualify fellowship graduates for future leadership positions within this field, management positions in conducting clinical trials, or for research and management positions within the Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (MRMC). Trainees are expected to complete 30 semester credit hours of integrated courses plus a mentored research program over four semesters. The Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) is granted by UTHSCSA after completion of the course work and submission of one full-length research manuscript to a peer reviewed scientific journal. The Clinical Research Fellow also has clinical care duties according to the specialty area in which the fellow has been previously trained

Application Process

As part of the GME application process, applicants are required to submit a pre-proposal detailing the area of clinical research to be completed during the two year fellowship. The pre-proposal is scored in addition to the standard documents utilized by the Joint Service GME Selection Board when considering applicants for this program. Applicants must be specialty board certified and meet all other GME requirements for selection. A separate application to the UTHSCSA MSCI program is also required.
