Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Emergency Medicine Residency Program. This program is part of a proud history in emergency medicine It has the distinction of being one of the nation’s oldest and largest emergency medicine residency training programs. The program began in 1977 at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), and in 1987 became a joint program with Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center (WHMC). In 1991, the Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program began at BAMC and has maintained a relationship with the SAUSHEC residency since then. The PA fellowship is one of only three training programs in the US that provides post-graduate specialty training in Emergency Medicine. We have also recently started two EM fellowships, Ultrasound and Emergency Medical Services. This past year brought many new changes to the set up of the residency. Primarily, we moved into the brand new consolidated Army, Air Force emergency department at the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) formally called BAMC. The resident rotations to WHMC have stopped. Previous graduates and past faculty have served the armed forces honorably and have gone on to be influential leaders in the specialty and you can expect your experience here to prepare you for similar successes.

The Department of Emergency Medicine also trains Special Forces Medics (18D), military and civilian medical students and residents and emergency nurses. The Department is actively engaged in research in emergency medicine, resulting in many publications in specialty medical journals and textbooks and representation in regional and national medical/scientific conferences.
