Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

SAUSHEC Diagnostic Radiology is a 5-year residency program, including 1 year of internship. Yearly, the program accepts 9-10 residents, 5 AF and 4-5 Army applicants, depending upon future needs of the respective services. Generally, 3 positions for each service are reserved for pre-selected applicants from the 4th year of medical school. Other positions are reserved for active duty (field) applicants.

The San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC; BAMC) is the DoD's only Level 1 trauma center. Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC) is the Air Force’s largest outpatient center. Together they comprise the San Antonio Military Health System, providing breadth and depth to each radiologic subspecialty. Over 300,000 examinations are performed at the two institutions making the SAUSHEC radiology program the largest in the Armed Services. Our robust faculty includes multiple fellowship trained radiologists in neuroradiology, body imaging, interventional radiology, musculoskeletal imaging, cardiothoracic imaging, nuclear medicine, pediatric radiology and women’s imaging. SAMMC houses the pre-eminent burn center for the US military, the Center for the Intrepid, and Institute of Surgical Research. Our residents have 4 outside rotations: American Institute of Radiologic Pathology in Silver Spring, Maryland (PY3), Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas (PY1 & 3), and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Texas (PY2). Funded TDYs include the Duke Radiology Review Course (PY3) and presentation of any first author research in the form of educational exhibits or podium presentations. Video teleconferences (VTC) are conducted at noon 3 times per week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between SAMMC, WHASC, and UTHSCSA, which share cases, lectures, and radiologic expertise between the 3 centers. The VTC curriculum covers core radiology topics in all the subspecialties, focusing on one subspecialty each teaching month. The morning case conferences (0715-0800) are organized to cover all the disciplines in radiology over the course of the academic month. Additional radiology conferences include MRI club, journal club and difficult case conference. A wide range of opportunities for clinical research exist. Residents attend and participate in numerous multidisciplinary conferences each month. Physics education includes a didactic program in PY1 followed by a physics laboratory program in PY2 and a self-paced physics web-module program in PY3.

SAUSHEC offers three fellowship training programs in radiology to include musculoskeletal imaging, nuclear medicine and emergency radiology.
