Mission: The Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations educates and develops selected military, civilian, and international leaders on the successful implementation of the National Military Strategy in a joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational environment.

Education: The Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations develops and conducts instruction on the Unified Command Plan, theater strategic planning, campaign planning through the range of military operations, joint, multinational and interagency plans and operations, joint service support to unified commanders in war and military operations other than war, organizing, training, and sustaining joint task forces, and joint and service-unique doctrine. Additionally, the DMSPO is responsible for conducting numerous courses of instruction outside of the Army War College environment including the Joint Flag Officers' Warfighting Course (JFOWC), the Joint Forces Air Component Commander Course (JFACC), Combined Forces Air Component Commander Course (CFACC), Joint Force Land Component Commander (JFLCC) Course, and the Combined Force Land Component Commander (CFLCC) Course.

Organization: The Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations is organized into four centers of excellence which design and develop the seven modules of the Implementing National Military Strategy Curriculum. These teams focus on strategic planning, theater and campaign planning, joint forces and doctrine, joint/combined warfare, and military operations other than war. The DMSPO is the Commandant's executive agent for the development of the Advanced Strategic Art Program (ASAP), the Basic Strategic Art Program (BSAP), the Warfighting Studies Program (WSP) and the Joint Force Land Component Commander (JFLCC) course.
