The American Citizen Services Unit delivers Federal Benefits checks to recipients, and accepts applications for Social Security Numbers.  We can also contact the Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration, and Office of Personnel Management in order to follow-up on claims, application status, Social Security Number applications, report changes of address, and to report non-receipt of benefits. Information concerning pending applications or how to apply for Federal Benefits (Social Security benefits claims, survivor’s benefits claims, educational benefits and compensation, and pension examinations) can also be obtained by contacting our regional office at the following address:

Applying for a U.S. Social Security Number

Information pertaining to who may apply for a Social Security Number abroad can be found below.  You can obtain the application and detailed instructions for applying for a Social Security Number overseas by clicking here (PDF 164 KB):

Only the following applicants may apply for an original Social Security Number abroad:

  1. United States citizens and legal permanent residents; and
  2. Nonresident aliens who have a valid current need for a social security number (for example, claimants for dependents and survivors benefits for whom a social security number is required to receive benefits).  Please note: nonresident aliens do not need a social security number to be claimed as a dependent on a U.S. tax return; be claimed as an exemption as a spouse of a U.S. taxpayer; file a joint tax return as the spouse of a U.S. taxpayer; register at, or apply for admission to, a U.S. school; and conduct business with a U.S. bank or financial institution.

Please note, if you are over the age of 18 and applying for your first social security number, you may be required to submit to an interview and make a Statement of Late Filing.
