Salem VA Medical Center

Visitor Information

Locations

Salem VAMC serves veterans from a 26-county area in southwestern Virginia. In addition to our main medical center in Salem, we offer a number of services to our patients in our community-based outpatient clinics.

Waiting Areas

For your convenience and safety, we have special waiting areas throughout the facility. Please do not gather in the hallways or at the nurses' stations. You may also want to review our Visiting Hours and Policies.

We have volunteers who work in the Intensive Care waiting areas at specific times. Please check in, and give the volunteer the patient's name. If you leave the waiting area at any time, please let the volunteer know, in case we need to contact you.

VA Police

Salem VAMC has a Police Service. Our federal officers provide 24-hour patrols of the facility and parking lots. For general police assistance, please dial 2225. In case of an emergency, dial 2224. Police have emergency call boxes in most parking lots for emergency situations. Report all suspicious or criminal activity, vehicle accidents, and personal property losses to the VA Police while on the grounds as soon as possible.

Because the Medical Center is federal property, all persons and bags are subject to search. In addition, weapons, alcohol, and illegal drugs are prohibited. VA Police enforce posted rules and regulations, to include speed limits, and parking regulations. Enforcement action is through usage of Courtesy Violation Notice, U.S. District Court Violation Notice, or physical arrest as appropriate.

Lost and Found

Lost and found is located in the Clothing & Valuables Room in the basement of Building 143, Room CB35A.

Chapel

The Chapel is located in Building 144 next to Building 12 and is available Sunday-Friday from 8a-4:30p for meditation and prayer. There is also a Meditation Room near the ICU in room 1EF-158. Chaplain services include pastoral care, spiritual help, and counseling patients of all faith groups. You may request that your nurse or medical clerk contact one of the Chaplains at ext. 2887.

CWT Greenhouse

The Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Greenhouse is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, year-round (except on Holidays).  It is located in the courtyard behind building 8.  All plants are grown and cared for by Veterans in the vocational program.  Directions:  Enter the VA grounds at the stoplight entrance.  Take the first left onto Patriot Circle, heading towards Building 8.  Immediately after Building 8, and before Building 7, turn right onto Garden Square.  Drive through the opening in the walkway (stop and honk first!) and bear right.  Parking is next to the Greenhouse.
