Warrant Officer have served in the Armed Forces of the United States since the
Revolutionary War. The first known appointment was to John Berryman, United
States Navy, in 1775. The birthday of the Army Warrant Officer Corps is 9 July 1918,
when the Army Mine Planter Service was established. Some of the early warrant officer
specialties were personnel technician, supply technician, and bandmaster. During
Work War II, flight officers wore warrant officer insignia and drew warrant officer
pay. After World War II, the Corps grew in size and significance as warrant officers
made their mark as technical experts. Today, there are approximately 12,000 warrant
officers on active duty, with an additional 12, 000 in the Army National Guard and US
Army Reserve. Warrant officers serve throughout the Arty in 15 branches and 62 occupational
