Ready to Help with MLK Day and the National Day of Service?
MLK Day
By CNCS Staff

Continuing a tradition he started at his first inauguration in 2009, President Barack Obama is calling on Americans all across the country to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and participate in the National Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013.

Volunteers assemble care packages for soldiers during the Operation Gratitude event held in RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, during 2009 Martin Luther King Day observances.

The National Day of Service is the First Family's most treasured inaugural event, but it's not just about what can be done on one day. President Obama will be asking Americans to make an ongoing commitment to service in their communities by focusing on seven issue areas: health, faith, education, the environment, honoring our veterans and military families, community resilience, and economic development.

Here's how you can get involved:

  • RSVP on the Presidential Inaugural Committee website today and commit to being a part of the National Day of Service this weekend.
  • Commit to service all year round by finding projects or creating your own using the tools on Serve.gov, the home of the President's nationwide service initiative, United We Serve.
  • Spread the word by telling your friends on social media how and why you're participating in the National Day of Service and MLK Day by using the #iServe and #MLKDay hashtags.

If you are in the Washington, DC, area Saturday, join us on the National Mall to engage with service organizations across the country and the issues you care about. Not able to make it to Washington? You can still contribute by participating in one of the many service projects happening across the country and in a community near you.

We're excited about this weekend and hope that you will help us make the National Day of Service and MLK Day a success, whether you join us in Washington or serve in a neighborhood closer to home.

Don't wait -- commit to being part of the National Day of Service today.
