Master Chief Gerard Chiu enlisted in September 1988 at Subic Bay, Philippines. He completed Recruit Training, Seaman Apprenticeship Training, Hospital Corps "A" School and Medical Laboratory Technician School in San Diego, CA.

His assignments include USS Wichita (AOR1) Alameda, CA; Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA; Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, CA; Third Force Service Support Group, Fleet Marine Force, Okinawa, Japan; First Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA; Branch Medical Clinic Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA; Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington, DC; 1st Medical Battalion 1MLG, and 1st Dental Battalion 1MLG, Camp Pendleton, CA; 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, I Marine Expeditionary Force (FORWARD), and 1st Marine Division (Forward).

Master Chief Chiu was a Senior Enlisted Leader at First Marine Division from January 2003-October 2005. He deployed to Iraq in 2003 with the largest Marine Division in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. From January 2004-March 2005 he acted as Command Master Chief for First Marine Division (rear) and again deployed forward to Iraq from 2004-2005 leading 400 sailors in combat operations notably the Al Fajr Campaign in Falluja, Iraq. In 2005, transferred to the Branch Medical Clinic, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Calif. In 2006 - 2008 he was selected for duty at the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Washington D.C. as Deputy Director of the Hospital Corps; where he coordinated, reviewed and implemented policies for a 27,500 strong Hospital Corps. He was hand selected as Command Master Chief of 1st Medical Battalion, 1MLG from April 2008-March 2009. Subsequently, he became Command Master Chief of 1st Dental Battalion, 1MLG from March 2009-August 2009. On September 2009, he was selected as the Command Master Chief of First Marine Expeditionary Brigade; re-designated as I Marine Expeditionary Force (FORWARD). On January 2010, he was selected as the Command Master Chief of 1st Marine Division (FORWARD) for its one year deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Master Chief Chiu is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (class 121) and completed the Command Master Chief and Chief of the Boat Course in April 2011. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, majoring in Business Management from San Beda College Manila, Philippines. In August 2004 he graduated from the University of Redlands at Redlands, California with a Master of Arts in Management.

Master Chief Chiu's warfare qualifications include the Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist. His personal awards include the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Combat Action Ribbon and various unit and campaign awards.
