Luis Herrera, new member of the National Museum and Library Services Board, City Librarian of San Francisco, and 2012 Library Journal Librarian of the Year will interview IMLS Director Susan Hildreth about goings-on in Washington and future plans for IMLS. The program will also feature an opportunity to meet in small groups with IMLS staff to discuss current or potential grant opportunities.

The Promise of Libraries Transforming Communities: A Presidential Initiative

This groundbreaking libraries-as-change-agents initiative is the beginning of a new partnership between ALA and the Harwood Institute of Public Innovation. ALA President Maureen Sullivan will moderate a panel of public innovators including Richard Harwood, Founder and President of the Harwood Institute; Tim Henkel, President and CEO of Spokane County United Way; and Carlton Sears, past director at Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and Certified Coach with the Harwood Institute. The session will identify aspirations and anticipated results of the Promise of Libraries Transforming Communities Initiative and highlight transformation experiences from similar partnerships. Funded through a grant from IMLS, the multiphase initiative’s goal is to provide librarians with the tools and training they need to lead their communities in finding innovative solutions by advancing library-led community engagement and innovation. The conversations at Midwinter are one step in building a sustainable, scalable national plan.

iMap Libraries Advisory Committee

Meeting of the advisory committee for the iMap Libraries project. The IMLS planning grant for iMaplibraries will be reviewed and sought. The major goal of the project is to better serve diverse audiences. Some of the data gathered thus far are rich and valuable, for example there are 2,320 public library outlets out of 16,808 outlets (13.8%) that are within two miles of a census block group with over 57% Hispanic population.

Digital Literacy Forum: Setting the Agenda

Join members of OITP’s Digital Literacy Task Force for an interactive discussion on its forthcoming report, a dissection of its National Conversations, and the first foray into developing a roadmap for future work. The Task Force invited public comment on the draft report and is developing a set of recommendations based on the report and member feedback. How can we ensure librarians continue to be leaders in the digital literacy arena? Contribute to this evolving conversation about digital literacy in the role of libraries of all types.

WebWise 2013: Putting the Learner at the Center
WebWise 2013 is set for March 6-8 at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace in Baltimore, MD.

In 2013, WebWise will steal a page from unconferences and thatcamps and feature a participatory and interactive format, with workshops, sessions, and lightning talks that give everyone more opportunities to learn from and collaborate with each other.
