12/3/2010 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- River Region residents can help the Montgomery Area Food Bank by donating canned goods when they attend this year's Glenn Miller Holiday Concert.

The free concert will be held at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre at 7 p.m., Dec. 10. Tickets are not required. Canned good donations are encouraged, but not required for admission. Seating is first-come, first-serve. There is only one performance this year. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The U.S. Air Force "Airmen of Note" will once again entertain with big-band swing favorites and holiday music, in the style of the late renowned band leader Glenn Miller, who was stationed at Maxwell for a short time in 1942.

On Dec. 24, 1942, U.S. Army Air Corps Capt. Glenn Miller and Maxwell's Rhythmaires band performed a Christmas concert on the base, in an aircraft hangar. Two years after his concert at Maxwell, Glenn Miller was ordered to France after the D-Day Invasion. On his way to France, his plane encountered trouble. He and the others aboard that flight were never heard from again. His concert at Maxwell was the inspiration for an annual holiday tribute to him, the first of which was held in December 1983.
