- October 14 is Dwight D. Eisenhower’s birthday. On October 25, 1953, junior high school student John D. Burke, Jr. wrote to President Eisenhower, telling him that the two of them shared a birthday, but he also wanted to lodge a complaint about his school. “Why,” he asked, “do we school kids have to learn about adverbs, adjectives, nouns, pronouns, verbs, etc?”

- Our museum’s new exhibit on the Civil War explores the war itself and the continuing interest Americans have in the conflict. Young Philip Armour of Oakland, California, was certainly interested in the Civil War. In a letter he wrote to President Eisenhower on July 31, 1959, he enclosed several lively sketches of major battles, including this one of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

- Staff at Disney studios worked on their own time to produce the short animated commercial, “We’ll Take Ike”. The lyrics for this song were written by Gil George, who was actually Hazel George. She was first hired as a nurse at Disney Studios. After her knack for writing was discovered she wrote song lyrics for The Mickey Mouse Club and a number of Disney animated feature films.
