Overton Brooks VA Medical Center
Shirley M. Bealer was appointed as the Director of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center on August 14, 2011. Prior to the Shreveport appointment, Ms. Bealer served as the Associate Director of VA North Texas Health Care System (HCS) in Dallas, Texas. Ms. Bealer was assigned as the Acting Director, VA North Texas HCS from January 2010 through January 2011. From February 2007 to July 2009, Ms. Bealer was the Associate Director for Patient Care Services of Central Alabama Veterans HCS in Montgomery and served as Interim Director from January 2008 to April 2009.
In 2003, Ms. Bealer became the Associate Director for Patient/Nursing Services for Central Texas Veterans HCS in Temple. She was responsible for all chaplains, nursing, nutrition and food, patient education, social work, and voluntary service. Ms. Bealer also served as Quality Management Officer for the VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network in Arlington, from October 1998 until October 2003.
Ms. Bealer joined the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in January 1979, as a staff nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Dallas VA Medical Center and served in several vital roles. Her responsibilities included positions as Quality Manager, Nursing Clinical Coordinator and Nurse Manager. Prior to joining the VA, Ms. Bealer worked as an Administrator and Consultant in Home Health Care Services in the private sector.
Ms. Bealer is a graduate of Dallas County Community College District, the University of Texas at Tyler and Texas Woman’s University. She is a member of the Nursing Organization of Veteran Affairs; American College of Healthcare Executives; Texas Nurses Association; Leadership VA graduate class of 2000; Executive Career Field graduate Class of 2002 (inaugural class); a 2009 graduate of VA Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program and is a member of the Senior Executive Service and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society.
