For Researchers and Research Partners

It's Launch Time for the Million Veteran Program…

The VA Office of Research and Development is launching its unprecedented partnership between VA and Veterans who volunteer to help build one of the largest databases of genetic, military exposure and health information. The Million Veteran Program (MVP) promises to reshape the field of genomics—a sophisticated science poised to revolutionize health care for Veterans and others throughout the U.S. and around the world.

Veterans who volunteer to participate in MVP are making an important contribution to genomics and health research, in an effort to improve understanding of how disease might be prevented and treated. By providing a blood sample and health information, Veterans are helping researchers discover the complex relationships between genetic variations and health issues.

Along with its large and diverse patient population, VA's world-class investigators and state-of-the-art technologies will help keep VA at the forefront of research in genomics. VA Chief Research and Development Officer Joel Kupersmith, MD, says of the forward-looking field, "Genomics provides additional information that can be used together by health professionals and their patients to determine the best care-moving one step closer to personalized health care."

MVP will be rolled out in phases over the next five to seven years, starting at the Boston VA Medical Center, and will ultimately be open to participation by Veterans nationwide receiving VA care. More information about MVP—including the stringent safeguards in place to protect the privacy and confidentiality for those who take part-is available at http://www.research.va.gov/mvp.
