Superintendent's Notes

Huntoon.jpg A few short months remain before graduation for the Class of 2013. But the day to day life of the Corps of Cadets in Term 2 is an undistracted focus on academic, military and physical development, which will lead to the privilege of becoming an officer in the US Army. The cool, gray days of winter are defined by long hours in academic buildings learning about the laws of physics or the laws of war, competing in hundreds of athletic contests, or marching into Washington Hall for another hearty winter meal. All have optimism that spring is just over Storm King Mountain or just around the bend in the Hudson.

Posts for the Class of 2013 are now set, and for them a growing sense of time remaining that sharpens their understanding of opportunity and accountability ahead as commissioned leaders of character.

Bartlett Hall construction continues in the physics side of the building, and Central Apartments on Thayer Road have been taken down to serve as a staging area for the new cadet barracks – now waiting the President’s signature for their final authorization in the pending Federal budget. Funding for current cadet barracks is also being supported. However, the Army budget is facing historic cuts which will affect operations, training, and personnel. USMA is sharing in those reductions. We will continue to execute our core mission to standard – the education, training and inspiration of the Corps of Cadets – their preparation for leadership. We will also continue to sustain Corps of Cadets at 4,400 and provide them with the world class education and military and physical they currently receive. Our limited budget will require us to suspend or cancel a significant amount of travel, conferences, some training and operations. Our Army and USMA have seen this kind of historic fiscal cycle before; our mission remains steady.

In this gray and cold season, the Corps is moving ahead with its work. Hundreds of cadets all moving towards the days after graduation – the days when they will lead, the days when their education, their physical fitness, and their military leadership development will serve the nation to the same standard that USMA has embodied since 1802.
