Purpose

The purpose of the Cancer Prevention and Control Investigators Workshop is to convene key investigators from each of the Community Clinical Oncology Program's (CCOP) Research Bases to outline the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) focus for cancer control and prevention research for the future. In addition to discussing the yearlong deliberation of the CCOP Strategic Issues and Priorities, which have been approved by the NCI leadership, the priorities of the new Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention will be discussed. Workshop participants will be asked to provide input on research portfolio expansion in the context of the Cooperative Group realignment and NCI's focus on molecular biology of cancer and a mechanistic approach to cancer interventions.

The workshop will review clinical research study designs by selected researchers, who will form panels to discuss design questions presented by meeting participants. The study designs presented will serve as concrete examples of NCI's renewed thinking regarding the scope of research to be supported by the Research Base cooperative agreements. Participants are encouraged to bring specific design and statistical questions to the meeting. Attention will be given to the use of genomics, biospecimens and non-tissue correlatives in the design and conduct of clinical research studies.
