How to Apply
Visitor (nonimmigrant) visas are for short trips to the U.S. for tourism, business, training, studies, ship and airline crew, exchange visits, transit or other special travel requiring petitions. Visitor visas are not for those who intend to reside in the U.S.
How to apply for a visitor visa. Please follow the following steps:
- Complete and print the DS-160 Confirmation Page.
- Pay Visa Fee online or at CITIBANK branch.
- Schedule an interview appointment.
- Visit the U.S. Consulate on the date and time of the visa interview.
- Pick up Passports.

1. Complete and print DS-160 Confirmation Page
All visa applicants must submit a completed DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application for all nonimmigrant visa categories (except for the K Category). This electronic form DS-160 is available at the following secure website:
Note: visa Applicants for "K visa" should still use the form DS-156 available at: https://evisaforms.state.gov/ds156.asp
- Print out only the DS-160 Confirmation Page. See sample.
Use a high quality printer (laser or inkjet). This page contains a barcode with all the application information in it which will be available to the Consulate. Protect this barcode so that it can be scanned.

If you are unable to upload a photo, simply bring one 2” x 2” photograph that contains a white background. No hats or sunglasses should be worn. Learn about photograph requirements.
- You must attempt to upload a photo, otherwise the system will not let you print the confirmation page.
Note: Please bring a recent photograph on the day of the interview, even if you have uploaded a digital photo to your electronic form DS-160.

Options to pay visa processing fees: 3. Schedule an interview appointment To complete this step, you must have paid the Visa Fee and completed the online form DS-160. You can schedule your interview after 1 p.m. the following business day after you have paid the appropriate fee at Citibank or PayPal. There are two options to schedule an appointment: If you miss your visa interview appointment, please reschedule with the Call Center or through the online appointment system. 4. Visit the U.S. Consulate on the date and time of the visa interview. On the date and time of your visa interview, you will need to bring: If the interviewing consular officer approves the visa, then 3-5 days after your appointment, you may pick up your passport with the visa from the Cargo Expreso location you selected when scheduling your appointment. If you need help with your visa application, want to learn more about obtaining a visa to travel to the U.S., please contact us at the following website address: __________________________________________________________ To qualify for a visitor visa you must demonstrate to the consular officer that: 1) you have strong ties that prove you will return to your home in Nicaragua after a short visit to the U.S.; and, 2) you will only engage in activities in the U.S. which are appropriate for temporary visitors. The focus of an interview will not be documents. However, the consular officer may wish to see documentary evidence supporting your case. Supporting documentation must be in original and should support your visa application by detailing employment, reason for travel, and/or current financial status (for example: pay stubs, jos letter, and bank statements or account booklets). In most cases, these documents should demonstrate that you have motives and intention to return to your country at the end of your visit. You will also need to bring the following documents: You must qualify for visitor visas on your own merits. Although other persons (including American citizens, U.S. residents, and Nicaraguan friends) can supply written letters and other documents pertaining to the motive of your trip, the consular officer’s decision is grounded by U.S. law through your own ties to Nicaragua. Third parties cannot legally take responsibility for your ties to Nicaragua by sponsoring you, paying for your travel or presenting guarantees of your intentions. Invitations from the U.S. are not enough to qualify your for a visitor visa. * Additional information for minor applicants: * Additional information for transit (C1) visa applicants: You must present evidence of transportation arrangements for your final destination (such as an airline reservation). Do not purchase your ticket until you have obtained the transit visa. * Additional information for student (F-1) visa applicants: You must present an original I-20 form from the U.S. school, as well as documents that demonstrate your ability to pay for your course of studies and stay in the U.S. Applicants for Student Status (F-1, F-3, M-1, or M-3) must also pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee (see Item 10 on the form I-20). You may do so by accessing the web page http://www.fmjfee.com/, paying the fee by credit card and printing the receipt, or by visiting your local Western Union office. You must also fill out and submit the electronic DS-160 application form, which is available here: DS-160 * Additional information for exchange visitor (J1) visa applicants: You must present an original DS-2019 (former IAP-66) form from the U.S. organization and also submit form DS-160 available at the link above. * Additional information for those seeking medical treatment: If you require medical treatment in the U.S., you should present a diagnosis from your doctor in Nicaragua. You should also present documents from the doctor or hospital in the U.S. that will treat you which show the type of treatment you will receive, how long your treatment will last, and what the approximate cost of treatment will be. You must present evidence that the financial costs of your medical treatment in the U.S. can be covered. * Additional information for crew (C1/D) visa applicants: You must present an original, valid crew letter from a cruise, ship, or airline company employer, as well as any current or expired visas. NOTICE ONLY FOR NONIMMIGRANT VISA APPLICANTS WHO PAID IN BANCENTRO BEFORE APRIL 16, 2012: For those applicants who made the payment for the visa process in BANCENTRO branches, may use the receipt of payment in the next 6 months. To schedule an appointment, write an email to: ManaguaNIV@state.gov, with your full name and the payment date. Your request will be responded within the next 3 business days after receiving your mail. Important Information: Starting July 13, all visa applicants who made their visa fee payments at Bancentro before April 16, will need to make a US$20 dollars differential payment on the date of the visa interview in the Consulate.
