Sylvia Reed Curran

Sylvia Reed Curran was born on January 11, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois. She has been a career member of the United States Foreign Service since 1987. She began serving abroad for the United States Department of State in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico (1987-1988); Ottawa, Canada (1989-1991); Beijing, China (1993-1997); Tashkent, Uzbekistan (2003-2005); and Tel Aviv, Israel (2005-2006). Ms. Curran previously served in Russia (1998-2001) where she was a Political Officer and Deputy Political Unit Chief in Moscow. Ms. Curran served as the Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires in Turkmenistan, Ashgabat (2007-2010).

In addition to her overseas assignments, Ms. Curran served as Special Assistant for Europe and Eurasia for the Under Secretary for Political Affairs in Washington, D.C. (2001-2002).

Previous to joining the United States Foreign Service, Ms. Curran worked in cytogenetics and biotechnology research at the University of Chicago where she focused on leukemia research.

Ms. Curran speaks Russian, Spanish, and Mandarin. She is a member of the Mensa Society. She has two adult sons, James and Martin. Ms. Curran received a BS in Biology and AAS in Chemistry from the University of Alaska, studied medical technology at the University of Hawaii, and received an MS in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University.
