Ambassador Robert J. Callahan inaugurated in Mateare the Beyond the Horizon humanitarian assistance exercise in the Nicaraguan communities of Managua and Leon, to be carried out by reserve units of the U.S. Armed Forces under the command of SOUTHCOM from April to June of 2010.

The humanitarian assistance consists of general medical services, dental and eye care, pediatric care, preventive and nutritional medicine, vaccinations, and veterinary services. As part of this exercise, the US Army Corps of Engineers will build potable water wells in three communities.

Beyond the Horizon will be conducted with the assistance of the Nicaraguan Army and the Ministries of Defense, Health, Education, and Agriculture, as well as the Nicaraguan water and sewer company, and local authorities.
