First Female Nicaraguan Photojournalist Holds Exhibitions Capturing US Culture and Society

July 30, 2012

Margarita Montealegre, a Fulbright alumna and the first female Nicaraguan photojournalist, held her “Algunos días festivos en los Estados Unidos” photography exhibition from July 30 to August 8 at the Casa de Salud DeBayle in León. The inauguration, held on July 30 at 6 pm, was well attended by students including those from the English Access Microscholarship Program, artists and many other members of the public.

As a part of the opening, Montealegre offered a guided tour to the attendees. The exhibition featured 53 selected photographs chosen from a total of 2,000 taken during her stay at Hampden-Sydney College in 2010 as a Visiting Professor.  Montealegre’s experiences with the culture, festivities and society in the United States are shared through her photographs. The traveling exhibition had been displayed in Managua at the Bi-National Center and the Instituto de Historia de Nicaragua y Centro America (IHNCA-UCA) before arriving in León. The exhibition will travel to Bluefields in October to be presented to the public.
