Air Force Symbol > Formats

Formats

The symbol is available in several different formats.

Symbol on White Background
Symbol On White Background
The standard use of the Symbol is blue, normally on a white background. This version is the appropriate choice for any white surface such as paper, walls, etc.

Symbol on Colored Background Symbol On Colored Background
When the Symbol must be used on a background other than white, the elements work best when edged in white. This allows the Symbol to be seen as two-color artwork. This version is the appropriate choice for any colored background, such as a wall or folder.

White White "Reverse" Symbol On Dark Background
A "reverse" version allows the Symbol to be recognized easily on black or dark surfaces. This use would be appropriate for dark binders or black equipment. This use allows the background color to show through the Symbol elements.

Metal and Metal-Look SymbolsMetal And Metal-Look Symbols
The silver metal three-dimensional rendering is for physical application on plaques and other surfaces where a raised metal Symbol would be appropriate. The background should be dark enough to provide appropriate contrast, allowing the metal to stand out.

Symbol in Circular BackgroundSymbol In Circular Background
To highlight the Symbol, especially if placement is needed on a similar color such as white or silver, consider adding a circular background behind the Symbol. The circular background offers variety and works very well on circular objects, such as coins or watch faces.

Words Approved For Use Under The Symbol

Unless approved by the USAF Chief of Staff, the only words permitted directly under the Symbol are "U.S. Air Force". Academy and ROTC are approved, in addition to Air | Space | Cyberspace.
To add other appropriate words or phrases not approved, visual separation from the Symbol is required. Placing line and/or color separation around or under the Symbol (for example, rectangles, pentagons, circles or color) provides a reasonable separation. Again, words or phrases should not distract from the Symbol.

Font
In all applications, no matter what the color, the correct font for "U.S. AIR FORCE" when used with the Symbol is "Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk bold extended." If "Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk bold extended" is not available use "Arial Black bold uppercase."
Approved
Unauthorized
If the words in the graphic to the left were separated from the Symbol by a line this use would have been approved. The graphic to the right was approved because the shape separates the Symbol from the words.

Placing the Placing Words Beside The Symbol
Watermark/Gray Scale
Appropriate words or phrases may be added to the right or left of the Symbol without the requirement for line and/or color separation. Font and size of words placed to the sides do not need to conform to logotype guidelines used under the Symbol.  Words or phrases to the left or right of the Symbol must adhere to the minimum 15% stand-off space.

Watermark/Gray Scale
Any of the downloadable options of the Symbol at this site may be used as watermarks or in gray scale. These are translucent versions of the Symbol that are visible behind or through other markings. The Symbol colors remain true, only the brightness and contrast changes.

Fabrications
The Symbol may be made of building materials such as glass, wood, metal or of edible objects such as cake and candy. People can line up to form the Symbol for events or for group photos. Guidance on this site applies to all fabrications of the Symbol.

3-D And Animations
Multi-dimensional designs and animations of the Symbol need coordination with the USAF Trademark and Licensing Office. Email requests to afpaa.hq.tl@us.af.mil.
