Just as the United States has embassies in foreign nations, foreign countries have embassies here in the United States. For example, there is a U.S. embassy to Russia located in Moscow and the Russians have an embassy to the U.S. in Washington D.C. Foreign embassies in the United States serve the same purpose for their country that U.S. embassies abroad serve for the U.S. (What is a U.S. Embassy)

The foreign embassies in the U.S. promote the values, culture, policy, and commerce of their nation to U.S. citizens. Often times, they hold public, cultural events where local musicians, artists, and performers from their nation are brought in to share a part of their culture. The embassies also serve as a resource for students and others to learn more about their country. For example, in 2012, the member countries of the European Union hosted an open house, where they opened their embassy doors in Washington D.C. to the public for a day of cultural education.

If you are planning on visiting a foreign country and either need a visa or wish to find out more information, that country’s embassy in the U.S. is the contact point. Additionally, if you are part of a company interested in conducting business in a foreign country, you can consult with that country’s embassy staff to learn about rules and practices which might help you better succeed

All foreign embassies are located in Washington D.C., where U.S. Government contact is most accessible. Because a number of historically significant buildings located on Massachusetts Avenue house many of these embassies and it is commonly known as Embassy Row. You will find, however, that there are many more embassies scattered throughout the city.

In addition to embassies, many nations also have consulates in major U.S. cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, and Miami. For instance, Mexico has over 45 consulates in the United States. These consulates serve their citizens who live or are traveling in the United States along with serving the economic interests the country has for that specific region just as a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas serves the needs of Americans.
