Passports
The U.S. Embassy in Lisbon provides the following passport services to American Citizens:
- Issuance of new passports, for minors and adults;
- Renewal of a current passport, for young adults and adults;
- Additional pages for an existing passport;
- Name changes in a passport*;
- Replacement of lost or stolen passports.
*If you have changed your name by marriage or divorce, you may apply for a new passport to be issued in your new name. You will need to submit documentary evidence such as a court order, marriage or divorce certificate, or other satisfactory evidence to support a change of name. Only original or certified copies will be accepted.
Citizens can complete their applications online, print a copy and bring it to the American Citizen Services Unit at the U.S. Embassy Lisbon, Consulate in Ponta Delgada, or the Funchal Consular Agency for faster processing. After completing the passport application online, please be sure you have all required documentation before making an appointment with the American Citizen Services Unit. You NEED to schedule an appointment to submit applications. You may schedule your appointment at https://evisaforms.state.gov/acs/default.asp?postcode=LSB&appcode=1. If you are renewing your passport, be sure to check the requirements because you may be able to renew by mail without having to visit the embassy.
All passport services, except for additional pages, will require one 5cm x 5cm (2in x 2in) photo on a white background. There is a photo booth at the Embassy that will generate two photos for 5 euros.
We accept payment in the form of cash, credit card or Portuguese postal money order. We do not accept personal checks or Multibanco cards. Current information about our consular fees.
Except in emergencies, U.S. passports are produced at facilities within the United States. It generally takes about three weeks from the time you apply at the American Citizen Services Unit to the time you receive your passport. We can send your passport to you by mail in Portugal; however, you need to provide a pre-paid CORREIO REGISTADO envelope, size A5/100gr OR a normal envelope size A5 with the seal and registration paid for 100gr.
