At-a-Glance

DanceMotion USASM sends American dance companies overseas to connect with audiences and communities through dance workshops, lecture demonstrations, public performances and other arts education activities.

Now in its third season, DanceMotionSM will send four contemporary American dance companies to 12 countries and territories in the Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belarus, Morocco, Nepal, Paraguay, Peru, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Ukraine starting in January 2013.

This program includes a U.S-based exchange, which brings a foreign dance company to present collaborative workshops and performances with an American dance company in the United States. During season three, a South American dance ensemble will come to the U.S. to collaborate with Doug Varone and Dancers.

Dance companies that will serve as citizen diplomats during this season include:

  1. Doug Varone and Dancers, a contemporary dance troupe based in New York, New York, will tour in Argentina, Paraguay, and Peru April 14-May 11, 2013
  2. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, is a contemporary dance company based in Chicago, Illinois, which will tour in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia March 25-April 25, 2013
  3. Illstyle and Peace Productions, is a multicultural dance company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which will tour in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine March 30-April 29, 2013
  4. Spectrum Dance Theater, is a contemporary dance company based in Seattle, Washington which will tour in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka February 22-March 24, 2013

The Brooklyn Academy of Music was selected through an open grant competition to implement season three of DanceMotion USA. Tours are slated to fan out across the globe beginning in January 2013, when members of the selected U.S. dance companies will perform and participate in educational outreach activities, including workshops, master classes, and stage and arts management sessions.

Program Length

Each tour lasts approximately one month.

Eligibility and Application Overview

There is no application for this program. Dance companies and countries are selected by a panel of dance experts, as well as representatives from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the grantee organization. DanceMotion USA participants should be:

  • U.S. citizens;
  • At least 21 years old.
